Student Case Studies

Every student’s journey looks different. These case studies illustrate how personalized guidance helps students with diverse strengths, starting points, and goals achieve strong results.

  • Starting Point

Student A came to me with an exceptionally strong academic record and a long list of advanced courses, enrichment activities, and leadership roles. They had participated in substantial STEM research, won multiple competitions, and were deeply involved in their community. Despite all of this, they felt overwhelmed trying to fit their wide-ranging experiences into a cohesive story.

    Approach

We worked together to map out academic and personal interests, as well as long-term goals. We clarified the connection between seemingly different activities and organized activities into a cohesive narrative. Additionally, we evaluated the complexity of their STEM research to ensure the impact was clearly communicated. This, combined with a careful application strategy, allowed us to match achievements and personality.

    Growth

Student A learned to highlight their experiences to reflect their motivations. They learned to explain technical topics in a way that feels natural and inviting. This student also became better at recognizing the through-line in their experiences, which helped them speak with poise during interviews.

    Outcome

This student earned admission to multiple Ivy League universities, top-tier research institutions, and several top 25 and top 50 options.

  • Starting Point

Student B entered the process with a strong academic track record and was an active leader in varsity sports. This student was responsible, organized, and well-respected by teachers; however, their application was heavily focused on academics and athletics, creating a more limited profile than selective STEM programs typically look for.

    Approach

Together, we explored ways this student could broaden their experiences within their areas of interest. Over time, this student participated in independent research and published their first paper, made a significant impact on their local community, and took on smaller leadership roles outside their primary activities.

    Growth

By the time application season hit, Student B had developed a multidimensional profile. This student was able to talk about what interested them (and why!), and eventually developed essays that showed personal depth and academic breadth - key application aspects for the selective STEM programs they were interested in.

    Outcome

This student was admitted to several top-tier research universities, accelerated degree programs, and received significant scholarship offers.

  • Starting Point

Student C was motivated to do well, but didn’t know how to explore or demonstrate their interest in computer science. Their activities were limited to a part-time job and occasional tutoring. This student had great potential, but their application didn’t show evidence of engaging with their interests.

    Approach

We developed a structured plan focused on exploration, skill-building, and confidence. Student C joined relevant clubs and enrichment activities and took on an external project that introduced them to real-world skills. This experience allowed the student to reflect on and refine their career goals.

    Growth

Over time, this student developed a clear sense of direction. They became more comfortable discussing their interests, more confident in their skill level, and more proactive in seeking opportunities. Student C’s application shifted from “promising” to “well-prepared.”

    Outcome

This student was admitted to a range of selective universities with several scholarship offers and multiple options aligned with achieving their goals.

I originally reached out to Emily for help building my son's college list. He wasn’t making progress on his own, and we didn't know what kind of schools he was competitive for. Emily took the time to evaluate my son's academics and extracurriculars and clearly described his chances at each school. She made us aware of schools we had never heard of that seemed to be perfect fits. She even suggested which majors to apply for in order to be more competitive. After going through the whole admissions season with Emily, my son was accepted to several schools, including his top 3 choices! I would definitely recommend working with Emily for all things related to college applications!
